I've used an alternate route on my return trip from the desert to my home in the SF Bay area several times. It goes like this: When I get to Mojave CA., instead of contnuing west on Rt 58, I hang a right, on Rt 14 heading north, and then hang a left on RT 178 heading west, which takes you past Lake Isabella and then down to Bakersfield along the Kern River. I've only included a few images on this page, but I think if you see them you will agree, it is a spectacular drive, and well worth the extra time. It's a difficult place to photograph though - a very narrow two lane road, with only a few spots to park. But when it can look like this? Wild horses couldn't keep me away! :-) ...
